Student accommodation powerhouse Iglu will build a mammoth 1100-bed precinct across the road from the University of NSW’s Kensington campus after winning the rights to develop a near 1 hectare site on Anzac Parade.

The 9280 sq m site at 215 Anzac Parade is a carpark next to the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA). Iglu, which is backed by Singaporean sovereign wealth fund GIC, has secured a 99-year lease on the site from the university after winning a competitive tender process.

Iglu’s plans for the site comprise five buildings offering student accommodation, office space, carparking, and retail tenancies as well as a restaurant and lifestyle precinct.

“Our vision for this incredible location is rightly ambitious in terms of master planning, precinct amenity and design, and we will be seeking to work in partnership with the University and the Randwick City Council to bring it to life,” said Iglu director Jonathan Gliksten.

Iglu will lodge a development application later this year after completing planning and design work and collaboration with the university and council.

Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. Iglu declined to provide an end value of its proposed precinct.

Its one of a number of student accommodation projects planned on a 2.5-kilometre stretch of Anzac Parade, which can accommodate buildings of greater heights and density under revised Kensington and Kingsford Town Centres planning controls which were adopted in October 2020.
